Namaz and Roza during Journey

NAMAZ

Definition of journey: If you are beyond 48kms of your city limits.
Namaz to be prayed in journey: Namaz-e-qasr (qasr means to cut down by half)
Duration: You have to pray qasr namaz if period of your stay is 9 days or less. You will have to pray full namaz if you know that your period of stay will be 10 days or more.
Rakaats: Fajr – 2 rakats (unchanged), Zohr, Asr & Isha – 2 rakats each, Maghrib – 3 rakats (unchanged)
Neeyat: (Example Zohr Namaz) Namaz padta/ padti hoon main 2 rakat Zohr ki Qasr waajib qurbatan illallah. (similarly for asr and isha prayers)
Fajr & Maghrib – Regular namaz, so regular neeyat. Do not say ‘qasr’ as you are not shortening the namaz.

Some Answers :
* If on the 9th day of your stay you get to know that your stay has extended for 9 days or less, then again you have to pray namaz-e-qasr, till the end of that stay. (but if you get to know it’s 10 days or more, you have to pray regular namaz).
*Again at the end of that 9th day (total 18 days now) you get to know that your stay has been extended for further 9 days or less, again you have to pray namaz-e-qasr. (but if you get to know it’s 10 days or more, you have to pray regular namaz).
*For the third time if you get to know at the end of the 9th day that your stay has extended by another 9 days or less, you have to pray namaz-e-qasr.
*The total number of days that namaz-e-qasr can be prayed is 29 days, after which regular namaz is supposed to be prayed.

ROZA in journey: Haraam
Definition of journey: If you are beyond 48kms from your city limits.
Qaza Roza: becomes waajib on you. (to be kept after ramzan)
Duration: You must not keep roza in journey if the duration of your stay is 9 days or less.
Extension of stay: same theory applies as mentioned for namaz-e-qasr. You can keep roza only if you know that your period of stay is 10 days or more.
Another way of putting it is that you cannot keep roza, in the state of praying namaz-e-qasr.

Kaseer-us-Safar – Mukammal namaz and roza is wajib for him/ her.
Kaseer-us-safar is a person whose work involves a lot of traveling, who is more in journey than he is at home. Ex: a driver, a pilot, a travel writer, etc.
But just being a driver, pilot, etc doesn’t make you kaseer-us-safar necessarily. The condition is that due to your profession if you spend 70% of your time, of the year, (not less) in travel, and only 30% at home, that’s when you are kaseer-us-safar, no matter what your profession is.

Fasting Laws in Islam

1576. * If a patient recovers from his illness in the middle of a day in the month of Ramadhan, before Zuhr, and if he has not done anything to invalidate the fast, he should make niyyat and fast. But if he recovers after Zuhr, it will not be obligatory on him to fast on that day.
1577. * If one doubts whether it is the last day of Sha'ban or the first day of Ramadhan then the fast on that day is not obligatory. If however, somebody wants to observe fast on that day he cannot do so with the intention of observing the Ramadhan fast, but if he makes an intention that if it is Ramadhan then it is the Ramadhan fast and if it is not Ramadhan then it is qadha fast or some other fast like that, his fast will be valid. But it is better to observe the fast with the intention of qadha fast or some other fast, and if it is known later that it was Ramadhan then it will automatically be Ramadhan fast. And even if he makes a niyyat of a natural fast, and later it becomes known that it is Ramadhan, it will be sufficient (i.e. that fast will be counted as the Ramadhan fast).
1578. If it is doubtful whether it is the last day of Sha'ban or the first of Ramadhan, and a person observes a qadha or a Mustahab fast or some other fast on that day, and later comes to know the same day that it is the first of Ramadhan, then he should convert the intention to the Ramadhan fast.
1579. * If somebody is undecided in his niyyat whether to break or not an obligatory fixed fast, like that of Ramadhan, or decides to do so, immediately his fast becomes invalid even if he does not actually break it or is repentant of his intention.
1580. * If, while observing a Mustahab fast or an obligatory fast the time of which is not fixed (e.g. a fast for Kaffarah) a person intends to break the fast or wavers whether or not he should do so, and if he does not break it, he should make a fresh niyyat before Zuhr in the case of an obligatory fast, and before Maghrib in the case of a Mustahab fast. That way his fast will be in order.

Things which make a Fast void
1581. * There are nine acts which invalidate fast:
(i) Eating and drinking
(ii) Sexual intercourse
(iii) Masturbation (Istimna) which means self abuse, resulting in ejaculation
(iv) Ascribing false things to Almighty Allah, or his Prophet or to the
successors of the Holy Prophet
(v) Swallowing thick dust
(vi) Immersing one's complete head in water
(vii) Remaining in Janabat or Haidh or Nifas till the Adhan for Fajr prayers
(viii) Enema with liquids
(ix) Vomiting
Details of these acts will be explained in the following articles:-
I. Eating and Drinking
1582. If a person eats or drinks something intentionally, while being conscious of fasting, his fast becomes void, irrespective of whether the thing which he ate or drank was usually eaten or drunk (for example bread with water) or not (for example earth or the juice of a tree) and whether it is more or less; even if a person, who is fasting, takes the tooth brush (Miswak) out of his mouth and then puts it back into his mouth, swallowing its liquid, his fast will be void, unless the moisture in the tooth brush mixes up with the saliva in such a way that it may no longer be called an external wetness.
1583. If while eating and drinking, a person realises that it is Fajr, he should throw the food out of his mouth, and if he swallows it intentionally, his fast is void, and according to the rules which will be mentioned later, it also becomes obligatory on him to give Kaffarah.
1584. If a person who is fasting eats or drinks something forgetfully, his fast does not become invalid.
1585. There is no objection to an injection which anaesthetises one's limb or is used for some other purpose being given to a person, who is observing fast, but it is better that the injections which are given as medicine or food are avoided.
1586. If a person observing fast intentionally swallows something which remained in between his teeth, his fast is invalidated.
1587. * If a person wishes to observe a fast, it is not necessary for him to use a toothpick before the Adhan of Fajr prayers. However, if he knows that some particles of food which have remained in between his teeth, will go down into his stomach during the day, then he must clean his teeth with toothpick.
1588. Swallowing saliva does not invalidate a fast, although it may have collected in one's mouth owing to thoughts about sour things etc.
1589. There is no harm in swallowing one's phlegm or mucous from head and chest as long as it does not come upto one's mouth. However, if it reaches one's mouth, the obligatory precaution is that one should not swallow it.
1590. * If a person observing fast becomes so thirsty that he fears that he may die of thirst or sustain some harm or extreme hardship, he can drink as much water as would ensure that the fear is averted. However, his fast becomes invalid, and if it is the month of Ramadhan, as an obligatory precaution, he should not drink more than that, and then for the rest of the day, refrain from all acts which would invalidate the fast.
1591. Chewing food to feed a child or a bird and tasting food etc. which does not usually go down the throat, will not invalidate the fast, even if it happens to reach there inadvertently. However, if a person knows beforehand that it will reach the throat, his fast becomes void, and he should observe its qadha and it is also obligatory upon him to give Kaffarah.
1592. A person cannot abandon fast on account of weakness. However, if his weakness is to such an extent that fasting becomes totally unbearable, there is no harm in breaking the fast.
II. Sexual Intercourse
1593. Sexual intercourse invalidates the fast, even if the penetration is as little as the tip of the male organ, and even if there has been no ejaculation.
1594. * If the penetration is less than the tip of the male organ, so that it cannot be said that intercourse has taken place, also if no ejaculation takes place, the fast does not become invalid. This applies to both, circumcised and uncircumcised men.
1595. If a person commits sexual intercourse intentionally and then doubts whether penetration was upto the point of circumcision or not his fast, as an obligatory precaution, becomes invalid, and it is necessary for him to observe its qadha. It is not, however, obligatory on him to give Kaffarah.
1596. If a person forgets that he is observing fast and commits sexual intercourse or he is compelled to have sexual intercourse in a manner that makes him helpless, his fast does not become void. However, if he remembers (that he is observing fast) or ceases to be helpless during sexual intercourse, he should withdraw from the sexual intercourse at once, and if he does not, his fast becomes void.
III. Istimna (Masturbation)
1597. If a person, who is observing fast, performs masturbation (Istimna), his fast becomes void (The explanation of istimna has been given in rule 1581/iii).
1598. If semen is discharged from the body of a person involuntarily, his fast does not become void.
1599. Even if a person observing fast knows that if he sleeps during the day time he will become Mohtalim (i.e. semen will be discharged from his body during sleep) it is permissible for him to sleep, even if he may not be inconvenienced by not sleeping. And if he becomes Mohtalim, his fast does not become void.
1600. If a person who is observing fast, wakes up from sleep while ejaculation is taking place, it is not obligatory on him to stop it.

"O ALLAH, fill this month with our worship of Thee, adorn its times with our obedience toward Thee, help us during its daytime with its fast, and in its night with prayer and pleading toward Thee, humility toward Thee, and lowliness before Thee, so that its daytime may not bear witness against our heedlessness, nor its night against our neglect!" - 04th Imam's (as) - Supplication for the Coming of the Month of Ramadhan.

Namaz for the First Day of the Month: Recite Two Rakaat in the first of which, after the recitation of Sura Hamd, recite Sura Ikhlas thirty times, and in the second after the recitation of Sura Hamd recite Sura Qadr thirty times and after the prayers give alms (Sadqa). Whoever does so, will have purchased from ALLAH (s.w.t) his safety for the month.

Few Important things in Mahe Ramzan

1. An Attitude of Anticipation and Enthusiasm
A believer looks forward to the month of Ramadhan. He enjoys the beauty of spirit that Ramadhan begins, the warmth of carrying out the orders of Allah, the hope of achieving His pleasure, and the happiness at being able to obey the commands of Allah. He is happy when the month arrives and sad when it departs.

2. Flexible Time and Schedule
Ramadhan requires that we set aside more time than normal for worship and prayers. A believer plans his time in such a way that in Ramadhan he is not overwhelmed by the demands of the world. He lessens work if possible and cuts down on activities which can be put to a halt for a little while. The chance to earn rewards and blessings from Allah in this special time will only last a limited time. Believers must make sure their daily schedules allow maximum benefit of this special time.

3. A Qur'an with a good translation
An important part of worship in Ramadhan includes reciting the Qur'an regularly. A Hadith tells us, Ramadhan is the Spring of the Qur'an. Understanding the word of Allah, and pondering over it should be daily activities in this holy month. A believer makes sure he has a copy of the Qur'an which is easy to read, and which has a simple translation which he can understand. If time permits, he should also read the commentary of the Qur'an. It is also important to have the right books for the Duas and A`amaals for this month.

4. A Donation to a Worthwhile Charity
Ramadhan is the best time to donate in the way of Allah. To feed the hungry or give to the needy is an act of great reward, especially during the holy month. Before the month of Ramadhan, a believer decides how much he can afford to give, chooses a worthwhile charity and sends his donation. This is a recommended charity, different from the zakatul Fitra which is obligatory for Eid. Hadith tells us that charity cools the anger of Allah and brings down many blessings on the giver. In the month of Ramadhan this rewards is multiplied many times.

5. A Determination to Avoid Sins
Fastings is not mere abstinence from food and drink, as we have heard many times. It is also staying away from all sins. While fasting, all the organs of the body fast, and refrain from doing anything which would displease Allah. A believer makes a firm decision to avoid all sins that he commits most often, and plans how he will stay away from them during the month. This conscious preparation of a war against sins is a very necessary item in the baggage of a believer in his journey towards Allah.

6. A Desire to Help Others
In his sermon at the approach of the holy month of Ramadhan, the Prophet (s) said: Whoever lightens the work of his workers in this month, Allah will make easy his accounting on the Day of Judgement. This does not only apply to those who have workers working for them. To help and lessen the work of others: parents, siblings, relatives, friends, etc. during the holy month is an act of great virtue. It eases the load of the other person, and brings about kindness and affection. Cooperating and assisting one another is greatly loved by Allah.

These and other similar important items are necessary for a successful journey during the month of Ramadhan. Each believer must try to be prepared as possible, lest the opportunity to redeem himself pass away. It is a great loss for the believer if the whole month of mercy and blessings passes, and he has not been able to achieve forgiveness of his sins, and has not won the pleasure of Allah, and the rewards that He gives so abundantly during Ramadhan. To avoid such a failure, it is necessary to keep a Ramadhan checklist that is regularly updated.

Significance of Fasting in Islam

The significance of fasting in Islam can be deduced from many verses of The Holy Qur'an. For example, the verses 2:45 reads:

استعینوا بالصبر و الصلوه و انها لکبیره الا علی الخاشعین

And take recourse in patience and prayer, and it is indeed hard except for the humble.

Based on several narrations, "patience" has been interpreted as fasting due to the fact that fasting, consisting of abandoning certain acts such as eating and drinking for part of the day is one of the best forms of patience. Muslims have been advised by the narrations to resort to fasting when confronted with challenging problems and difficulties.

Although fasting is deeply connected to the month of Ramadan, it is an important act of worship by itself that cab be performed outside Ramadan as well. Except for two forbidden days, fasting is a recommended deed throughout the year, especially in certain months such as Rajab and Sha'ban and on certain days such as Mondays and Thursdays.

Moreover the month of Ramadan, regardless of fasting, provides a great opportunity to give  even to those upon whom fasting is not incumbent an opportunity to benefit from countless merits of this month. Interestingly, this opportunity is not confined to mature people, for Islamic narrations state that a fetus in his/her mother's womb or an immature child can participate in this banquet of Allah (SWT). Furthermore, sleeping is not regarded as an impediment for one's share of the excellence of the month of Ramadan.

Month of Ramadan as described by the Holy Prophet of Islam

In a well-known sermon delivered by the Holy Prophet of Islam (S) in the last Friday of the month of Sha'ban, he emphasized:

ایها الناس انه قد اقبل الیکم شهر الله بالبرکه و الرحمه و المغفره

Oh people! Month of Allah has come toward you bringing divine blessing, mercy and forgiveness.[1]
The subtle point in this phrase is the fact that these three divine offerings are not granted to the people at the end of this month; rather, these are the special gifts of the month of Ramadan from the very day it begins.

The Holy prophet continued:

شهر دعیتم فیه الی ضیافه الله

This is the month in which you have been invited to the banquet of Allah. [2]

According to the wording of the above phrase, people are "invited" to this banquet. Therefore, in order for one to enter such an auspicious banquet, he should accept this invitation and act upon it.

Generally speaking, while "banquet" is understood as requiring something to eat, drink and may also include some kind of entertainment, the "banquet of Allah" is essentially different. Fasting is a condition for one in order to receive the special gifts granted by Allah (SWT) in this banquet.

Essential elements of a banquet

For grasping the character of divine banquest, we should first note that every banquet consists of four essential elements:

1.      When you are invited you will not be rejected. Thus, the host is expected to welcome his guest; otherwise, an "invitation" is meaningless when the invitee is denied of reception. Accordingly, when Allah (SWT) invites His servants to the banquet of Ramadan, the gates of His mercy will be opened to those who accept the invitation.

2.      When you enter the venue of the banquet, you will be treated with honor and respect. Although every person who has been let in is not competent of being respected, the same is not true for the one who has been invited as a guest. In light of this fact, one may understand the following statement in the above-mentioned sermon:

و جعلتم فیه من اهل کرامه الله

In this month, you are made of those people whom Allah respects and honours.[3]

3.      When you go to a banquet you will be given or shown something without payment. In other words, you expect to gain something without return. Correspondingly, in the banquet of Ramadan, Allah (SWT) not only rewards our actions gernerously, but also entertains His guests with various bounties without them doing something so much so that He counts the sleep of His guests as an act of worship and their breaths as His glorification, as explicitly stated in the same sermon:

انفاسکم فیه تسبیح و نومکم فیه عباده

Your breaths in it (the month of Ramaḍan) are glorification (of God) and your sleep in it is worship.[4]

4.      When you are invited to a party, you naturally expect to meet the host and consider his absence as a humiliation. Accordingly, when Allah (SWT) invites His servant to His banquet, by nature, He is ready to show Himself to His guests and meet them.

"This is the month in which you have been invited to the banquet of Allah.." This part of the sermon inspires the fact that this blessing has been dedicated to the month of Ramadan. The Holy Prophet of Islam added:

شهر هو عندالله افضل الشهور و ایامه افضل الایام و لیالیه افضل اللیالی و ساعاته افضل الساعات

In the sight of Allah, this month is the best month, its days are the best days, its nights are the best nights and its hours are the best hours.[5]

Although this month's prominence over others involves that its days, nights and hours are the best as well, by mentioning these three phrases independently, the Prophet emphasized that every portion of this month is better than its counterpart in every other month.

Recommendations for the month of Ramadan

The sermon continues by several instructions:

ایها الناس، ان ابواب الجنان فی هذا الشهر مفتحه فاسالوا ربکم ان لا یغلقها عنکم

Oh people! The gates of heaven are open in this month. So ask your Lord not to close them.[6]

The phrase, ‘the gates of heaven being open’ has at least two meanings:

I The chance of the one to deserve entering heaven is more in this blessed month than the other months.

II Due to the openness of heaven’s gates, all kinds of divine mercy in heaven are ready to encompass the servants in tis world, angels are permitted to come to their presence and the breeze of heaven blow into this world. These make the sleep and breaths of the faithful in the month of Ramadan like the inhabitants of heaven glorification of God and worship.

Although the gates of heaven are open, the Holy Prophet warns people that if they do not appreciate such a great opportunity, subsequently Allah (SWT) will close them. The situation of the gates of fire is quite the contrary:

و ابواب النیران مغلقه فاسالوا ربکم ان لایفتحها علیکم

And the gates of the fire are closed. So ask your Lord not to open them.[7]

Along these lines, the condition of satans is described as follows:

و الشیاطین مغلوله فاسالوا ربکم ان لا یسلطها علیکم

And satans are in chains. So ask your Lord not to dominate them over you.[8]

Although Satan and his assistants are chained up in this month, committing sins results in releasing them. Therefore, while the month of Ramadan is the best month in itself, for a group of people, this month is worse than the other months just as the Holy Qur'an is

"a cure and mercy for the faithful; and it increases the wrongdoers only in loss" (17:82).

The fourth Holy Imam, Imam Sajjad, (A) in his farewell supplication for the holy month of Ramadan declares:

السلام علیک ما اطولک علی المجرمین و ما اهیبک فی صدور المومنین

Oh month of Ramadan! Peace be upon you! How long you were for wrongdoers and how awesome you were in the hearts of the faithful![9]

As implied by this supplication and as proved by the experience, the month of Ramadan, for those who do not fast deliberately and without any religious excuse, seems like a whole year and every moment of it is a kind of torture for them. On the contrary, those who do their best to appreciate this month find it passing quickly and are concerned about losing a second without taking the full benefit of it.

Another instruction offered by the Holy Prophet in his Sh‘baniyyah sermon is:

اذکروا بجوعکم و عطشکم فیه جوع یوم القیامه و عطشه

When you feel hungry and thirsty in this month remember the hunger and thirst of the Day of Judgment. [10]

Tolerating thirst and hunger in this world is so difficult. We must then ponder upon the fact that the thirst and hunger in the hereafter last for years and years or for some groups of people forever. Additionally, in this world, death may be regarded as a solution for intolerable thirst and hunger, but in the next world, eternal life turns this solution into a useless one. In this regard, Chapter 43 Verse 77 reads:

وَ نادَوْا يا مالِكُ لِيَقْضِ عَلَيْنا رَبُّكَ قالَ إِنَّكُمْ ماكِثُونَ

They will call out," O Mālik! [the name of the guardian of the hell]  Let your Lord finish us off!" He will say," Indeed you will stay on.

According to the Holy Qur'an, there is no death for wrongdoers in the hereafter and even when their skin is burnt a new one will be replaced so the punishment of the hereafter is always experienced as a fresh one! Chapter 4 Verse 56 reads:

إِنَّ الَّذينَ كَفَرُوا بِآياتِنا سَوْفَ نُصْليهِمْ ناراً كُلَّما نَضِجَتْ جُلُودُهُمْ بَدَّلْناهُمْ جُلُوداً غَيْرَها لِيَذُوقُوا الْعَذابَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كانَ عَزيزاً حَكيما

Surely those who disbelieved in Our Signs and Miracles, We shall cast them into the Fire. As often as their skins are roasted wholly, we shall change them for other skins that they may taste the punishment. Verily, Allah is the Invincible-Mighty, Wise.

Thus, when compared to the chastisement of the doomsday, worldly pains can be regarded as nothing. It has been recorded in history that during the caliphate of Imam Ali (A), when his blind brother 'Aqil asked him to grant him an additional portion of public treasury due to his severe poverty, the Holy Imam (A) brought a hot piece of metal near ‘Aqil. Feeling the hotness of it, 'Aqil protested: "Are you going to burn me?" "No!" Imam replied. "You cried because of a metal made hot by a human being for fun. Then, how do you expect me not to cry for the fire prepared by Allah (SWT) due to His anger?"

Beside reminding us of the hereafter, the thirst and hunger during the  month of Ramadan  reminds those who fast of poor people experiencing the same feelings during whole days of their life and encourages those who fast to spend some portion of their properties in the way of Allah (SWT) and for the sake of needy people.

Some narrations regarding fasting

The Holy Prophet of Islam (S) is quoted as saying:

ان الله عزوجل وکّل ملائکه بالدعاء للصائمین و قال اخبرنی جبرئیل عن ربه انه قال ما امرت ملائکتی بالدعاء لاحد من خلقی الا استوجبت لهم فیه.

Verily Allah (SWT) has appointed some angels only in order to pray for the people who fast. Gabriel has informed me that Allah (SWT) has said: "I have not commanded my angels to pray for one of my creatures, unless I have accepted their prayers for him."[11]

The sixth Holy Imam, Imam Sadiq (A) has stated:

من صام لله عزوجل یوما فی شده الحر فاصابه ظما وکل الله به الف ملکا یمسحون وجهه و یبشرونه حتی افطر قال الله عزوجل له ما اطیب ریحک و روحک ملائکتی اشهدوا انی قد غفرت له.

When a person fasts on a hot day for the sake of Allah and becomes thirsty, Allah SWT sends 1000 angels to touch his/her face and give him/her glad tidings up to the time of breaking the fast when Allah (SWT) tells him/her: "How nice you smell! What a pleasant soul you possess!  Oh my angels! Bear witness that I have forgiven him/her."[12]

Based on narrations like this, everything that seems bad in this world is not necessarily the same in the hereafter and vice versa. Therefore, although the person who fasts his mouth may smell bad in this world, he has a pleasant odour  for Allah (SWT) and the residents of heaven. On the other hand, a woman smelling nicely for non-mahram men will not be the same in the world to come. Thus, realities are not necessarily what appear to us in this world.

- According to a very famous tradition narrated by both Sunni and Shi'ite scholars, the Holy Prophet said:
قال الله عزوجل الصوم لی و انا اجزی به

Allah (SWT)  said: "fasting is for me and I am the one who rewards for it”. [13]

The content of this narration has been widely discussed among the scholars. While all worships are for Allah (SWT) and rewarded by Him, the Almighty, why has fasting been appropriated a special position in this narration?

Three answers might be suggested here:

1.      The first reason is that fasting is the abandoning of some acts; thus, it is the only worship that is not seen or known by anyone.

2.      Another reason, as suggested by some scholars, is the fact that during the history, all kinds of worship (praying, pilgrimage, giving alms, sacrifice, and so on) have been offered to idols and false gods and the only exception among the acts of worship is fasting since no one has ever fasted for anyone or anything other than Allah (SWT).

3.      The third reason is the special relationship between fasting and Allah swt just as we call some days as the days of Allah (SWT) and some places as the house of Allah (SWT) , even though every time and place belong to Him. This meaning implies the special mercy of Allah (SWT) for those who fast.

The same implication is true with the next phrase which says: "and I am the one who rewards for it." When some workers are employed by a person he may give their wage to his agent to distribute among them. However, if the job is a special one he may personally hand the wages out to them. Similarly, Allah (SWT) without any mediation rewards those who fast.

It is noteworthy to mention that the Arabic term "اجزی" in the above-mentioned narration can be read in both active and passive forms. According to the latter, the narration gives another meaning:

"Fasting is for me and I am its reward!"

Thus, the one who fasts has Allah (SWT) with him/her as the reward of his/her act of worship just as the guest of a banquet who expects the host to welcome and meet him/her.

Ramazan about to Start

As Salam-o-alaikum,

The month of Shabaan is approaching its end and the month of Ramazan
is about to start. This newsletter emphasizes the importance of
fasting in the last 3 days of Shabaan.

Imam Jafer Sadiq(a.s.) reports that Prophet Mohammad(sawaw) has said
that Shabaan is my month and Ramzan is the month of Allah(swt).
Therefore, if anyone observers one day of fasting during Shabaan, I
will do his/her "shafaat" on the day of judgment, and one who
observers two days of fasting then his/her previous sins would be
forgiven and if someone observers three days of fasting then it would
be just like all the sins have been washed away.

Imam Ali Riza(a.s.) has said that if someone observes fast during the
last three days of Shabaan and combines them with the fasting during
the month of Ramazan then Allah(swt) will grant the sawab of two
months of continuous fasting to that person.

It is, therefore, advisable to fast in the last three days of Shabaan
to become eligible for a great Sawab.

Why Welcome Ramazan (Ramadan)

Imām Muḥammad ibn ‘Alī al-Baqir (a.s.) says that the month of Ramzān
was nearing and three days of Shaban were left when the Holy Prophet
(sawaw) told Bilal(r.a.) to call people to him. When people came, then
Holy Prophet Muḥammad al-Mustafa (sawaw) mounted the pulpit and
praised and glorified Allah . Then he said,

“The month, which you are going to have now is supreme among all other
months. There is a night in this month, which is better than a
thousand months. The doors of Hell are closed in this month and the
doors of Paradise are opened. One who is not forgiven in this month
also Allāh distances him. Similarly, a person has parents and is not
able to get himself forgiven Allah distances him. One who does not
recite Salawat when my name is mentioned in front of him, his
salvation is not possible and Allah distances him.”

Special Duas of Ramazan

According to some Ulema, the desire to see the Ramzan Moon is sunnah. According to others, it is wajib. Therefore, when anyone should see the Ramzan moon, should face the Qibla and raise the hands toward the sky and recite the following dua :

Rabbi wa rabbukal-lahu rabbul aalameen
Allahuma ahil-lahu alaina bil amni wal imaani
Was-salamati was-salami walmusaraeti ila ma tuhibbu wa tardha
Allahumma barik lana fee shahrina haza warzuqna khairahu
Wa aonahu wasrif anna dhar-rahu wa shar-rahu wa balaa-ahu wa fitnatahu

My Lord and your Lord is Allah, the Lord of the worlds. O Allah for us let this month be a period of peace, faith, safety and total submission to Thy will; make us walk apace swiftly to that which Thou likes and approves. O Allah pour out much blessings on us in this month, make available for us its generous good and assistance, and keep us safe from the harm, evil, misfortune and mischief that may try to trap us in this month.

And the best dua to recite after viewing the moon is Dua-e-Sahifa-e-Kamila.

Prophet Mohammad(pbuh&hf) used to recite this dua after sighting the Ramzan moon while facing the Qibla:

Allahumma ahil-lahu alaina bil-amni wal imaani was-salamati wal islami wal aafiyatil majal-lalati wa difa-il asqaami wal aoni alas-salati was-siyami wal qayami wa tilawatil Qurani
Allahumma sal-limna le shahri ramazana wa tasal-lamhu minna wa sal-limna fihe hatta yanqaziya anna shahru ramadhana wa qad afaota wa ghafarta lana wa rahimtana

whatever little there is and release from hardships frequently, Verily Thou art

Oft-forgiving, Merciful.

O Allah I ask for the faith which gives joy,

satisfaction and confidence to my heart

till I am positively aware that I will not have my fill

unless it has been approved for me,

and happiness will agree with me only whereby justly and fairly distributed,

O the Most Merciful.

O my Companion in my difficulties!

O my Guardian in my happiness!

O the ultimate of my inclinations!

Thou covers up my shortcomings, affords security in the event of crisis end fearful

disasters, therefore, overlook my transgressions,

Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem closer to Allah’s greatest name

What is Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem?

A verse in the Holy Qur'an that means "In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful"
The first verse in the Holy Qur'an
A verse repeated 114 times in the Qur'an
A form of remembering Allah (Dhikr)
A phrase that is common in the Muslim community

Despite being true that it is all that, the Basmala goes much further than being just a phrase. It is true that it is very common nowadays and Muslims say it when they are about to initiate almost anything – sometimes it seems that it has become simply a habit, and that can be dangerous. Just like experienced car drivers do not think about the position of their feet or hands while they drive, saying something over and over can lead us to think of the phrase as just a string of words and ignore the deep meanings embedded in it, especially when it comes to the words of the Qur’an. In order to prevent this from happening, Allah asks us to continuously contemplate and reflect.

“Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem”, also known as the Basmala, should be treated with care and the aforementioned bullet points should serve as an incentive to deeply examine this highly-regarded phrase.

But before we get into the different dimensions of the Basmala, it is always encouraging to read up some of the merits of this verse. Here are a few:

The Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) says: “Whoever says ‘Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem’ will have 4000 good deeds written for them, 4000 evil deeds erased for them, and will be raised 4000 degrees.” (Bihar al-Anwar)

When asked about the greatest verse in the Qur’an, Imam Ali ar-Ridha (peace be upon him) says, “[It is] ‘Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem’.” (Tafseer al-Ayashi) He also says: “Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem is closer to Allah’s greatest name than the whiteness of the eye (sclera) to its blackness (pupil).” (Wasa’il ash-Shi’a)

These narrations shed light on some of the significances of the verse and how Allah has given this verse a lot of weight. Just by saying these few words, “Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem”, the amount of blessings and rewards are huge.

However, the focus is now directed at a completely different aspect of the Basmala, and one seldom discussed: its implications. Specifically, we shall explore how “Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem” serves as a sign of love for, obedience to, submission to, and – most importantly – faith in Almighty Allah.

The Sign of Love

Take a look around you. How many businesses, personal belongings, and assets are named after people, families, countries, famous figures, and so on? For instance, patriotic individuals include their country’s name in the name of their shop. Some people include their family’s name in their emails. Others will associate themselves with a political figure. You can see logos, banners, pictures, and so much more on Facebook pages today. Indeed, everywhere we are encountering the attribution of our assets and personal belongings to names of people or other entities. Some of the motivations behind such cases are love, pride, and a sense of belonging. For example, one of the main reasons we name a business after our father, mother, son, or daughter is the powerful connection between us and that particular individual. We love them. We have a strong passion towards them. They inspire us. They motivate us. We want the whole world to know how much we care for and love them.

In this life, our actions, decisions, and thoughts are our main assets. We will be judged based on our deeds. Then what better name to have our deeds under than the name of Allah? Truly, if we love Allah and are passionate about everything that is connected to Him, then we will strive to keep everything in the name of Allah. We will start and end our matters in the name of Allah. Simply put, Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem will emanate from that heart that is filled with love for Allah.

Love of Allah is a pivotal point in the life of a Muslim. Allah states in the Qur’an, “Those who believe are stronger in love for Allah” (2:165). Imam Ali (peace be upon him) mentions in the sermon in which he describes the pious, that “the greatness of the Creator is seated in their heart, and, so, everything else appears small in their eyes.” (Nahj al-Balagha, sermon 193)

Once that love we have towards Allah takes over us, and we solidify it through Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem, then we will have started on the path of reaching the higher levels of piety.

The Sign of Obedience

Love originates from the heart but is portrayed through actions. Every action can be identified by a source and a destination. The source and destination can be either righteous or corrupt depending on whether they follow the rulings of Allah or not. For example, a person can earn money by selling crops (righteous source) or through stealing (corrupt source). The money can be used to help the poor (righteous destination) or in gambling (corrupt destination).

By definition, a corrupt source or destination is a deviation from the way of Allah. Thus, only the righteous source-destination combination is acceptable, despite other combinations being available. The person who loves Allah will always seek His pleasure by doing what He asks and by avoiding what He forbids. Since the name of Allah is above all corruption, then it does not make sense for someone claiming to love Allah to take part in forbidden things, especially in His name. One cannot, for example, sayBismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem before drinking alcohol, committing adultery, or engaging in any other sin. That is hypocrisy. It just does not fit!

In the same sermon about the pious ones, Imam Ali says, “If there had not been fixed periods (of life) ordained for each, their spirits would not have remained in their bodies even for the twinkling of an eye because of (their) eagerness for the reward and fear of chastisement.” (Ibid)

So, the Basmala will always keep a person in check of his/her actions. This process of purification eventually leads the person, once again, towards piety. That is the case since the actions will be accepted, as Allah says in the Qur’an, “Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous.” (5:27)

The Sign of Submission

By taking a slightly different direction, the Basmala helps break away from the materialistic world we exist in. When our matters are in the name of Allah, they are connected to a divine existence. This is where the worshipper admits that Allah is governing over all matters. The worshipper will therefore accept all that comes out of what he/she is doing and submit to the respective fate. The worshipper’s creed will be such that Allah will make things happen in a way that will be beneficial – whether in this life, in the Hereafter, or in both. One cannot do something in the name of Allah and then be angry with Him. The words “…ir Rahman nir Raheem” reinforce this point as one refers to Allah’s mercy on everyone (Al-Rahman) and on the believer in particular (Al-Raheem).

Therefore, once we realize these facts, we have reached the level of submission to Allah’s will. And yes, that can only be achieved by seeking a connection with the unseen, also known as “Ghayb”. Of course, belief in the unseen is an important quality of the pious. Allah says, “This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah who believe in the unseen.” (2:2-3)

The Sign of Faith

The Basmala has taken us on a journey of love, obedience, and submission Allah. Piety was a common fruit throughout the journey. And once all these levels fuse together, then we have a bright representation of the proper faith a Muslim should have. In fact, a true believer needs all those entities – love, obedience, and submission – or else we will have a major loophole in our belief. Can a Muslim love Allah and not obey Him? Can we obey Allah and be angry with what He brings us? Truly, with the Basmala, we are striving to acquire the necessary elements to perfect our faith and belief in Allah. Therefore, the Basmala, in its purest and complete form, becomes a sign of a true believer.

But there is a small catch.

Imam Al Hasan al-Askari (peace be upon him) says, “The signs of the believer are five,” listing them until he reaches: “saying ‘Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem’ in a raised voice.” (Wasa’il ash-Shi’a)

Many can say the Basmala out loud, but the Imam is referring to the believer who says it out loud while he or she is fully aware of its depths. Even further, saying it out loud reinforces love for, obedience to, and submission to Allah.

Every year, we see millions go to Makkah for Hajj. Anyone who sees that picture will immediately recognize the faith and devotion of the pilgrims. Every year on the 20^th of Safar, millions make their way to the Shrine of Imam Hussain (peace be upon them) in Karbala. Anyone who sees that image will feel the faith and devotion portrayed by the visitors. Similarly, saying “Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem” will make it clear what Islam is all about and it will portray the way we Muslims are connected to Allah. It is more than just Dhikr. When the Imam says we should raise our voices when we say it, it has become our case.

One More Step

For those interested in diving deeper into the Basmala, I leave you with the following narration:

Imam Ali says: “Know that all the secrets in the divine books are in the Qur’an. All that is in the Qur’an is in Al-Fatiha. All that is in Al-Fatiha is in the Basmala. All that is in the Basmala is in the ‘Baa’ [of ‘Bism’]. All that is in the ‘Baa’ is in the dot under the ‘Baa’. And I am the dot under the ‘Baa’.” (Yanabee’ Al Mawadda)

And to stimulate your thoughts even further, try to consider the connection between raising the voice when saying “Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem” and our allegiance to Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib.

It is Our Case

All in all, saying “Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem” is a great privilege and we should thank Allah for allowing us to lead our lives in His name. The amount of blessings and returns we receive is something we cannot enumerate. This verse is a sign of our belonging to Islam, so we should strive to do it justice.

So the next time you wake up, go to sleep, start an exam, sign a contract, or stand before Allah in prayers, remember that when you say “Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem”, you are making a case. Make sure your case is a winner!

दुनियाभर में अजादारी को फैलाने में हमारे नौहाख्वान और शायर बहुत अहम रोल अदा कर रहे हैं। चाहे वह पाकिस्तान के नदीम सरवर हों या फिर भारत के अमीर हसन आमिर या शायरों में जनाब रेहान आजमी, मजहर आब्दी (पाकिस्तान), नैयर जलालपुरी, शम्स रिजवी (भारत) हों, इनकी शानदार शायरी और आवाज की बदौलत अजादारी की मुहिम को और भी आसान बना रही है। हमारे इमामों की दुआओं के चलते ही इस साल भी दोनों मुल्कों में कई उभरती हुआ आवाजें और शायरी अजादारी को परवान चढ़ाने सामने आईं।

Aamal Roz-e-Ashoor

The 10th of Muharram is known as Ashoora or Roz-e-Ashoor. The night

before the day of 10th is known as Shab-e-Ashoor. In both the night

before and the day of Ashoor, Masoomeen(a.s.) have taught their Shias

special aamal which need to be recited. Here I give a brief account of

these aamal.

(1) Keep awake whole night and continue performing salat, majalis,

noha and matam.

(2) Recite Ziarat-e-Imam Hussain(a.s.)

(3) Recite 4 Rakaat prayers in the following manner:

- In every rakat recite 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha and 50 times Sura-e-

Ikhlas

- In the 1st Rakat, 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha then 10 times Ayat-al-Kursi

- In the 2nd Rakat, 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha then 10 times Sura-e-Ikhlas

- In the 3rd Rakat, 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha then 10 times Sura-e-Falaq

- In the 4th Rakat, 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha then 10 times Sura-e-Naas.

[Note: According to "Mafateehul Jinnan" in every Rakay recite Ayat-al-

Kursi, Sura-e-Ikhlas, Sura-e-Falaq and Sura-e-Naas 10 times each.]

(4) After completing the prayer, recite 100 times Sura-e-Ikhlas

(5) Recite Salawat and "Allahummal an qatalatal Hussainehi wa

ashabeehi"

Notes

Sura-e-Fatiha - Alhamd-o-lillahe Rabbil Aalameen

Sura-e-Ikhlas - Qul ho Allah ho Ahad

Sura-e-Falaq - Qul aaoozo berab-bil falaq

Sura-e-Nass - Qul aaoozo berab-bin naas

Ayat-ul-Kursi - Allah-ho la ila ha illa ho al hay-yul qayyum

Aamal Roz-e-Ashoor

(1) Observe faqa (abandon eating and drinking) without the intention

of fasting.

(2) Organize and attend majalis, Nohas and matam dari.

(3) Recite 1000 times Sura-e-Ikhlas (Qul ho allah-ho ahad)

(4) Recite 100 times - "Allahummal an qatalatal Hussaine wa ashabehi"

(5) Recite 4 Rakat Namaz in 2 sets of 2 rakat each in the following

manner:

- In the 1st rakat, 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha then 1 time Sura-e-Kafiroon

- In the 2nd rakat, 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha then 1 time Sura-e-Ikhlas

- In the 3rd rakat, 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha then 1 time Sura-e-Ahzaab (in

the 21st para of the Holy Quran)

- In the 4th rakat, 1 time Sura-e-Fatiha then 1 time Sura-e-Munafiqoon

(in the 28th para of the Holy Quran)

If one does not remember these suras by heart, one can recite them

reading directly from the Holy Quran or can also recite any other

Suras that one remembers by heart.

(6) After completing this salat, recall the event of Karbala and the

killers of Imam Hussain(a.s.) and 1000 times recite "Allahummal an

qatalatal Hussaine wa ashabehi". (O Allah condemn and lay a curse upon

the killers of Hussain(a.s.), his family and friends)

(7) After this, go forward a few steps from where you are standing and

the recite "Inna lillahe wa inna ilehe rajeoon- Rizan be qazaa-ehe wa

tasleeman le amreh". Then come back to your place. Repeat this

procedure 7 times.

(Verily we are Allah’s and verily unto Him we return. We are

hapy with His will and carry out His command)

(8) Then go back to your place where you are standing and recite:

ALLAAHUMMA A’D’D’IBIL FAJARATAL LAD’EENA SHAAQQOO

RASOOLAKA WA H’AARABOO AWLIYAAA-IKA WA A’BADOO GHAYRAKA

WAS-TAH’ALLOO MUH’AARAMAKA WAL-A’NIL QAADATA WAL

ATBAA-A’ WA MAN KAANA MINHUM FA-KHABBAWA

AWZ”A-A’MA-A’HUM AW

RAZ”IYA BI-FIA’-LIHIM LAA’- NAN KATHEERAA ALLAAHUMMA

WA A’JJIL FARAJA AALI MUH’AMMAD WAJ-A’L

S’ALAWAATIKA A’LAYHI WA A’LAYHIM WAS-TANQID’HUM

O Allah! Condemn and punish the licentious profligates who make

the life of Thy Messenger miserable; and waged was against Thy

close friends, and worshipped others, (but ) not Thee, deemed

lawful (that which) Thou had forbidden, bring a curse upon their

leaders, followers, on those who were in them , secretly or

distinctly were hand in glove with them, or condoning their (mis)

deeds. A great many curses.

O my Allah, bid to bring joy and happiness quickly for “Aali

Muhammad”, (the children of Muhammad), bestow Thy blessings

on him and on them, save them from the dangerous clutches of the

undercover two-timers, and the obstinate disbelievers; open ofr

them the doors of “the beginning”, a facility to put in

practice gentleness, kindness and fairplay; create favourable

conditions for them to make life full of love and thought,

cheerful, free of care, as early as possible, on Thy authority

let them have full control over Thy enemies, to help, rescue and

defend (mankind).

(9) Then raise your hands, having in mind the enemies of

“Aali Muhammad”, and say:

INNAKA A’LAA KULLI SHAY-IN QADEER

(raise your head, look towards the sky and say):

A-O’OD’U BIKA AN AKOONA MINALLAD’EENA LAA YARJOONA

AYYAAMAKA FA-A-I’D’NEE YAA ILAAHEE BI-RAH’MATIKA MIN

D’AALIKA

O my Allah! Indeed a great many among the people declared war,

laid traps and intrigued against the careful and gentle guardians

who observed and fulfilled the duty. The ungratefuls (the said

opponents) renounced the faith and did not, in fact, believe in

the “Kalimah” (LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAAH); attached themselves

to the trend setters of disorder and tyranny; disowned and gave

up the Book and the (Divine) rule of life; swerved from and

angled off the two strings which according to Thy commandment,

(they) should have held fast and stuck close by; undermined and

twisted the truth;

Went, away from the real purpose, in the opposite direction ;

encouraged partisanship;

Altered and falsified the Book; refused to believe in the evident

proof and rightful clain, whenever confronted face to face; chose

falsehood, whenever came across; lost their way and corrupted Thy

laws, Islam; led people astray; killed the children of Thy

Prophet, Thy liberal highminded servances, bearers of Thy

knowledge, inheritors of Thy wisdom and revelation, the Book. O

myAllah, pset and overturn the plan and movement of Thy enemies,

(who are also) the enemies of Thy Messenger and the children of

Thy Messenger. O my Allah, put a stop to the spread of their

sphere of influence; make their equipment and men unserviceable,

their expression confused and contradictory; brak up their

support; crack up their stategy; lay hold upon them, hit and cut

off by Thy one sharp strike; throw them down, frightened by Thy

hard unnerving barrier, bury them under the swallowing mud of

disasters; let them be mean and contemptible under the yoke of

despise-able penance; bring them to book and let them have the

taste of a hard and sharp retribution; fester them with definite

and exemplary punishment, as Thou wipes out Thy enemies; it is

beyond the shadow of doubt that Thou cracks down upon the

criminals. O my Allah, the way of life approved by Thee has been

tossed aside; Thy code of law has been suspended; and the

descendents of the Prophet, in this world, had been tormented. O

my Allah, Therefore give all Thy attention and care to signify

truth, and the upholders of truth; restrain and prevent

falsehood, and the camp-followers of false-hood, and take us to

safety as a favour; guide us to true faith; make available for

us, as soon as possible, happiness and bliss, bring everything in

to good order through the inspiring presence of Thy

representatives; make us desire and love them , make them receive

us with open arms. O my Allah, bring to nothing those who

celebrate the day the choicest (grand) son of Thy Prophet was

martyred, in cheerful amusement; laugh and enjoy in utter delight

and indulge in wanton bois-terous merriment; catch hold of and

punish each one of the remaining, just as Thou cracked down on

the early (culprits); make twoce as muchthe penalty, O my Allah,

and punishment, a warning example, (while convicting0 the tyrants

who took liberties with and abused the children of Thy Prophet;

give the eath blow to their henchmen, put an en to their headmen,

wipe out their patrons and their groups altogether. O my Allah,

multiply Thy blessings generously, Thy mercy liberally, Thy

favours like a windfall, (thou bestows) upon the children of Thy

Prophet, who Thy enemies tried to ignore, frighten and corner,

the children who are the blooming pride of the fragrant strongly

grown and fertile tree. Let people subscribe to and uphold, O my

Allah, their expressed refined (thoughts), and get the better of

the antagonists in debate and disputations through their

arguments, put the dark clouds of trouble, distress nothingness

and ignorance, to flight, through (on account of) them, make firm

and strong the hearts and minds of their followers (to know

things for certain and give correct answers), to belong to Thy

party, obedient to Thee; to love them; to support them ; stand by

them, signify them; they exercised self-control whenever they put

up with damage and injury in Thy cause; bring in, for them, the

days, people will see them and find them among themselves to

pronounce the profession of true faith, a blissful and happy

time;

Be quick in providing relief and joy, after a long period of

suffering (to them and us), on account of their presence; bring

on their worthy, decent and refined sphere of influence; and

support them as Thou has given a guarantee in this connection in

Thy revealed Book; Thou said, (and Thy words are always true):

Allah has promised such of you as believe and do good deed that

He will surely appoint them successors in the earth, as He

appointed successors those before them, and that He will surely

establish for them

Their religion which He has chosen for them, and surely He will

give them inexchange safety after their fear. Thy (shall) ascribe

nothing as partner unto Me. O my Allah! Therefore disperse the

dark clouds hanging over them, no one has power to keep safe from

pair and distress save He, O Unique ! O Single ! O Everliving ! O

Self-subsisting! I, O my Allah, Thy bondman, cautions and

(always) aware of Thy just requital, turn to Thee with a request,

standing before Thee, to seek the favour of taking refuge with

Thee, in Thy courtyard, fully aware of the fact that there is no

way to run away from Thee except unto Thee. O my Allah, accede to

my request, take notice of my positive statement and heartfelt

secret avowal, O my Allah, and let me be the one whose conduct

satisfies Thee, (whose) pious life devoted to Thee receives Thy

approval, (whom) Thou brings to a place of safety through Thy

mercy; verily Thou art rare, dear and beloved (because of ) Thy

kindness. O my Allah, send blessings, in the beginning and at the

end, on Muhammad and on the children of Muhammad; keep at peace

at all times, Muhammad and the children of Muhammad, let Thy love

and tenderness always envelop Muhammad and the children of

Muhammad, more thoroughly and decisively than Thou had blessed,

kept at peace and loved Thy Prophets, Messengers, Angels and the

bearers of Thy Arsh, in the name of and for the sake of “LAA

ILAAHA ILLAA ANTA”. O my Allah, let there be no separation

(ever) between me and Muhammad and the children of Muhammad, Thy

blessings be on him and them; let me be one among the friends and

followers of Muhammad, Ali, Faatimah, Hasan aned Husayn, and

their pure and select descendants; give me the insight to cling

to their friendship, and be always ready to walk with them, and

make use of their life style; Verily Thou art liberal, Generous

and Kind,

(Now go into prostration (Sajdah), keep either side of your face

on the earth, one after the other, and say):

O He who decrees that which He wills, does that which He wants.

It is Thou who possesses and exercises absolute power; therefore

(all) praise is for Thee (only); (Thou alone art) the

praiseworthy, the thankworthy. O my Master, let them have a life

full of love and peace, and let us share the harmony and bliss

with them, because Thou has given a guarantee to put them on the

highest pedestal of love, honour and wisdom, after the severest

trial and tribulation, to do too much for them , exceeding all

bounds, after they had put up with the worldly minimum (in Thy

cause), to make them distinct and evident after (Thy enemies)

kept them in obscurity, O the Most Truthful ! O the Most

Merciful! I beseech Thee, O my Lord, and Master, humble and weak

before Thee, to throw wide open doors of Thy generosity and

kindness to let my hope (of fulfillment of heart’s

desires)come true, and get and ather what I want in surplus; and

make valid my deeds, whether insignificant looking or weighty,

prolong my days until I am satisfied with being an eye-witness,

and give testimony, and be among those who are called upon, so

run to obey them, love them and support them (the descendents of

the Holy Prophet);

Make me see that very soon, close at hand, in good health sund

mind and with believing heart. Verily Thou art able to do all

things

(raise your head, look towards the sky and say ):

in Thee do I seek refuge that I should be among those who hope

not for Thy “Days”, so make me full well and be there, O

my Master, through Thy mercy, in that time.

(10) Recite Ziarat-e-Imam Hussain(a.s.) and then Ziarat-e-Ashoora (1st

method) or Ziarat-e-Ashoora (2nd method)

(11) Finally recite Ziarat-e-Nahiya.

(12) Give pursa of Imam Hussain(a.s.) to other momineen in these

words:

Aazamallahu ujoorana bi-musabina bil Hussain(a.s.) wa ja-alna wa

iyyakum milat talibeena

bi-sarihi ma-aa walee-yehil imamil mahdi(a.s.) min aali muhammadin

alehimus salam

Bahrain's embattled Shiites keep parliament seats

Manama (Bahrain), Oct 24 - Bahrain's embattled Shiite-led opposition held on to all of its parliament seats in weekend elections, according to official results announced today, but fell short of the majority it hoped to win as a show of strength against the island kingdom's Sunni rulers.

The leaders of the strategic US ally have waged a campaign of arrests and intimidation against suspected Shiite opponents since August, claiming they seek to undermine the ruling system and could open the door for Shiite powerhouse Iran to exert influence in the heart of the Arab Gulf.

Shiites in Bahrain say they only seek greater rights and opportunities after being shut out from key decision-making roles in the country.

The main Shiite opposition group, Al Wefaq, kept its 18 seats in the 40-member legislature. Even without a majority in yesterday's election, it could still forge alliances with liberal parties and others to eventually gain the upper hand in parliament for a symbolic slap to Bahrain's leaders.

As in the last elections, in 2006, the Shiite group said there were irregularities, including at least 890 voters being turned away from polling stations in mostly Shiite areas because their names were not on electoral lists.

There were also allegations that voting districts were gerrymandered to undercut the Shiites' numerical strength Bahrain is one of the few Arab countries with a Shiite majority, though it is ruled by a Sunni dynasty.

We really aren't satisfied with the outcome, said Al Wefaq leader Sheik Ali Salman. We are the majority of the country and a majority of the voters, but we don't get a majority of the seats. Why is that? It is clear that the government is doing this to keep us from gaining a bigger voice. We won't be satisfied until the election rules have changed.

Bahrain does not allow international election monitors.

The claims could result in challenges to the outcome and complicate hopes of cooling tensions after waves of arrests and street clashes between majority Shiites who claim widespread discrimination and the Sunni leadership seeking to maintain its grip.

Bahrain's parliament has only limited powers and can be overruled by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and his inner circle. Still, many Shiites hoped that gaining more seats would have sent a message not to ignore their demands for a greater say in how the country is run.

The king opened Bahrain's clan-based political system after taking power in 1999 and introduced the parliamentary elections, creating one of the few elected legislative bodies in the region.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) terrorists arrested over targeted Shia killings

Karachi (Pakistan), Oct. 11 - Terrorists of the banned terrorists religious outfit, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ), have been arrested over their involvement in targeted sectarian violence and weapons recovered from their custody, claimed Capital City Police Officer (CCPO)-Karachi Fayyaz Ahmed Leghari on Sunday at a press conference held at the Central Police Office.

He informed that During the course of investigations, a police team under the supervision of SSP Investigation West Zone Khurram Waris on a tip off conducted a raid on Saturday night in Iqbal Market Block-D Sector-11 1/2, and after an encounter, arrested two wanted terrorists.

The men have been identified as Naseem Haider alias Ferron and Asif Rasheed alias Dumba. The police also recovered one SMG, two TT pistols, one 9mm pistol, one repeater gun and several rounds from their custody. Both the accused have been shifted to the investigation unit for interrogation.

While CCPO Leghari described the accused Haider as a hardened terrorist of the banned LJ, other officials said that Haider joined the LJ group in 1997, and was sent to Afghanistan to receive training from notorious terrorist Khalid Bin Waleed. Once his education in handling various kinds of weapons concluded, he was sent back to Karachi with the orders to kill people from various sects.

From 2000 to 2003, Haider was involved in a number of sectarian killings, but was arrested in 2003 by the Sindh police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over his involvement in five cases of sectarian killing. He was released on bail by a court in 2007 for want of evidence, and subsequently, restarted his criminal activities.

The CCPO added that Haider was heading a group of terrorists active in Karachi, and was involved in killing Shia and Ahmadi doctors. After his release, he met up with his associates, including Waseem alias Baroodi, and they formed four to five-member cells.

Haider was planning an attack on a worshiping place of the Ahmadis before his attack, the CCPO said. Further, he said, the held suspect is a named accused in two FIRs; one lodged at Iqbal Market Police Station in connection with Maulana Ghulam Mohammed’s murder, while the other registered in the Pakistan Bazaar Police Station for killing a man named Shahzad. Further probe is under way.

It may be noted here that the Shia Community of Orangi Town area had demanded the arrest of Naseem alias Ferron and Asif alias Dumba. They were former members of Muttahida Qaumi Movements student wing APMSO and now performing their terrorist’s activities under the cover of Sipah-e-Sahaba’s and Laskhar-e-Jhangvi.

The area people informed the Shiite News via their emails that these terrorists were involved in the killing of scores of Shia’s community in Orangi Town and local organizational setup of MQM, a coalition party of PPP, was also supported these terrorists.

Some people said that they were also involved in the assassination of MQM’s Shia MPA from Organi Town Shaheed Raza Haider.

Worrying times : Shia Muslims in the Gulf

FOR minorities, success is best in small doses. Too much may stir bigotry and charges of dual loyalty, or even make some within the minority dangerously impatient for change. Shias on the Arab side of the Persian Gulf have long lived with such ironies. Largely ignored through centuries under Sunni rulers, they now feel increasingly exposed.

First came the Islamic revolution of 1979 in neighbouring Iran, whose ripples frightened those rulers and emboldened their Shia subjects, leading to ugly clashes that subsided only in the 1990s. The more recent rise of Shia influence in Iraq and the success of Hizbullah, the Shia party-cum-militia in Lebanon, have caused similar waves, made stronger by Iran’s bid to become the dominant—and perhaps nuclear-armed—regional power.

Conditions for Shias vary among the Gulf monarchies but had until recently been broadly improving. In relaxed and relatively liberal Kuwait, where Shias account for a third of the ultra-rich citizenry, they have long been prominent in business and in government. Some hold high office in Bahrain, too, but proportionately far fewer than their two-thirds share of the island kingdom’s population.

Saudi Arabia has the largest number of Shias at 2m-odd, but they are thinly diluted in a population ten times bigger and are subject to more systematic discrimination. No Shia has become a cabinet minister or general—or even a headmistress in a state school, reflecting the Saudis’ severe Wahhabism, in effect the kingdom’s official doctrine. Still, in recent years the Saudi government has loosened some strictures on Shia worship and forced extremist Sunni clerics to lessen their anti-Shia vitriol.

Those gains look fragile amid a mood of rising sectarian tension across the region. In Bahrain, months of agitation by Shias campaigning for greater rights have led to growing government fears of worse to come in the event of trouble with Iran. Pressure from Saudi-aligned Sunni radicals has led to a full-scale crackdown on Shia politicking. Widespread arrests, the closure of mainstream Shia websites and newspapers, and the banning of some Shia preachers from mosque pulpits have combined to tilt much of Shia opinion into sullen hostility to the state.

Sectarian jitters

Many Bahrainis were shocked when a prominent Shia cleric, Ayatollah Hussein Mirza Najati, was ordered to be stripped of his citizenship. By contrast, Bahrain’s Shias often complain that the government has secretly given citizenship to thousands of foreign Sunnis in a bid to alter the sectarian balance. Moderate Shias still counsel patience with the ruling al-Khalifa family, whose promises of reform a decade ago had quelled unrest until now. But clouds may be gathering ahead of a parliamentary election due next month.

Kuwait’s authorities have grown jittery, too. Following sustained pressure from Islamist Sunni members of parliament, the emirate revoked the Kuwaiti passport of Yasser al-Habib, a Shia preacher exiled in London, whose sermons suggesting that one of Muhammad’s wives had poisoned the prophet prompted widespread outrage, including condemnation by fellow Shia clerics. Alarmed by a spate of calls for Sunni protests, Kuwaiti police have banned all public meetings.

More quietly, Saudi authorities have for months been harassing local Shia campaigners, arresting dozens and holding many for weeks at a time. A ban on fatwas by independent Sunni clerics has muted public attacks on Shias, but Sunni chat-sites on the internet still describe them menacingly as a fifth column for Iran.

Islam brought about a great revolution in the field of knowledge in Arabia where literacy was almost unknown and people took pride in their ancestry rather in culture and civilization. According to Tabari, the great historian and commentator on Qur’an, there were no more than 17 people in pre-Islamic Mecca who could read and write. No wonder than that pre-Islamic period came to be called period of jahiliyya i.e. period of ignorance. It5 was in this background that Qur’an’s emphasis on knowledge has to be seen. The very first verse begins with the word iqra’ (read) and the word ‘ilm (knowledge) occurs more than 800 times in Qur’an as against the word jihad which occurs no more than 41 times. Qur’an called ‘ilm light and jahiliyya darkness.

One can say there were three principle sources of knowledge in Arabia of the: time Qur’an, the Prophet (PBUH) and Ali. The Qur’an was of course the principal source which came through wahi (revelation) to the Prophet, Prophet’s contribution was through hadith (what he said on various subjects) and sunna i.e. what he did and people observed and reported. Ali’s contribution has reached us through his speeches as he was man of great oration and which was later collected under the title Nahj al-Balaghah i.e. (Highway of Oration) and some letters he wrote to his governors. There is famous hadith of the Holy Prophet accepted unanimously “I am city of knowledge and Ali is its door” and one enters the city through door. Such was the importance of Ali in the matter of knowledge. Ali contributed very richly to intellectual advancement of Muslims.

Qur’an is source of revelatory knowledge i.e. from Allah and Prophet’s knowledge was innate rather than acquired and Ali’s knowledge was what the Prophet passed on to him and hence called ‘ilm ladunni as well as what was born of his vision of the society. Prophet was insane-e-kamil i.e. perfect human being and Ali next to him in perfection. Hence for sufis Muhammad and Ali were two sources of inspiration. The Prophet (PBUH) lived in this world and yet was never attached to it. Ali, who always tried to closely follow the Prophet, never felt attracted towards the allurements of the world. Je is even reported to have said I divorce the world thrice i.e. never to be attracted by it.

Ali, like the Prophet, was basically a deeply spiritual person and yet, like the Prophet, was conscious of the fact that millions of people live in this world and this world should be such as to provide meaning and guidance to human life and to minimize human suffering. Renunciation of the world is no solution. This is possible only if one fulfills bodily needs but does not become slave of ones body.

There was power struggle in early Islam but Ali kept away from it unless power was thrust on him after the assassination of third Caliph Hazrat Usman. Ali, while avoiding temptation of power was also conscious of the fact that one needs power, not to control others but to enforce certain rule of law, morality and justice. Qur’an provided best guidance and yet all those who embraced Islam did not become perfect Muslims. They had all sorts of worldly temptations and many of them even had embraced Islam for worldly gains.

Ali’s priority, therefore, was to mould Muslims into real mu’min (i.e. believers) and make them good Muslims and this world a just place to live in, in keeping with the Qur’anic teachings. Qur’an tried to strike balance between spiritual and bodily needs, between materialism and spiritualism, the Prophet being its perfect blend. Ali’s exhortations in Nahj al-Balaghah are a rich source of this approach. Since Ali never sought power to control others and exercise his authority, when it was thrust on him he used it to enforce rule of law and justice as rigorously as he could. In this process even his closest allies were alienated from him but he did not care. Abdullah bin Abbas was his closest ally and yet he wrote a stern letter to him when he took money from state treasury as a governor of Basra which was more than his share. He left Basra unhappy.

Ali’s letter to another of his faithful ally Malik bin Ashter, governor of Basraq which is considered as masterpiece of principles of governance. He advised Malik ”do not say, ’I am your overlord and dictator, and that you should, therefore, bow to my commands”, as that will corrupt your heart. He further writes to him, “Let your mind respect through your actions the rights of God and the rights of human beings…for otherwise you will be doing injustice to yourself and injustice to humanity.”

He also advises Malik Ashter to”Care for them with tenderness with which you care for your children, and do not talk before them of any good you might have done to them, nor disregard any expression of affection which they show in return…

Chief Justice should be selected, he writes, from the best of people who cannot be intimidated, who does not err too often, one who does not turn back from the right path, one who is not self-centred or avaricious.

Thus it would be seen Ali’s concept of power was for people. Never over people but unfortunately the world was not perfect enough to accept this concept and he paid price for it through his life and became martyr for the cause on 21st of month of Ramadan.

Today, as you are driving home from work, it happens. After the initial jolt, you find yourself strangely detached from your body and the twisted metal around you. As you assess the situation, you realize that this is an accident you won't survive.
As you begin to evaluate your life, your thoughts turn to Imam Ali (peace be upon him), approaching death after receiving the fatal blow while he offered his prayers. He had exclaimed, "By the Lord of the Ka'ba, I am successful!" What an upright life he lived – a model of success for all – and what perfect, simple advice he had left in his last will and testament!

"My advice to you is to be conscious of Allah and steadfast in your religion."
Now at the hour of your death, you are wholly conscious of Allah. So many hours of your life were spent without thinking of Him, when there really is nothing but Him. At this moment, you yearn for all those hours back to remember God, to pray intently, to give thanks for your countless blessings.

"Do not yearn for the world, and do not be seduced by it. Do not resent anything you have missed in it."
It seems so silly now how intent you were on getting a bigger house. You wanted it so badly you could taste it, and you resented your coworker who never seemed to have to work hard for anything. You secretly yearned to be free of responsibility to your family that always made demands of you, feeling you were missing out on the pleasures of life. But right now at this moment, you realize you would be content to spend a lifetime living in a tent or a car and that you would love to redo all your time with your family so that you could appreciate your blessings this time around. All your complaints seem so petty now!

"Proclaim the truth; work for the next world. Oppose the oppressor and support the oppressed."
You spent years of your life working for money and respect. While some of it was necessary and good, much of it was for status or excess wealth. You always intended to prepare for the next world, but this one always seemed to consume your full attention. You let lies pass or confused you, and you let oppressors stand unopposed because you were too busy and didn't want to bring trouble to yourself.

"I advise you, and all my children, my relatives, and whosoever receives this message, to be conscious of Allah, to remove your differences, and to strengthen your ties. I heard your grandfather, peace be upon him, say: 'Reconciliation of your differences is more worthy than all prayers and all fasting."
You had estranged yourself from kin and brethren. You had quibbled with them over various things, like who should be the prayer leader or paying off a debt. But now you realize they were all a test for you, and you failed the test. All of them could have been a source of blessing and companionship in your life if you had softened your heart toward them.

"Fear Allah in matters concerning orphans. Attend to their nutrition and do not forget their interests in the middle of yours.

Fear Allah in your relations with your neighbors. Your Prophet often recommended them to you, so much so that we thought he would give them a share in inheritance."
Your neighbors included a single mother and her children. You knew that she struggled to pay her rent and to get gifts for her kids on the holidays. How nice it would've been to bring smiles to their faces and ease their worries. Instead, you are now haunted by their troubles, knowing you could have helped.

"Remain attached to the Quran. Nobody should surpass you in being intent on it, or more sincere in implementing it.
Fear Allah in relation to your prayers. It is the pillar of your religion.
Fear Allah in relation to His House; do not abandon it as long as you live. If you should do that you would abandon your dignity."
Regret consumes you for the way you treated the Qur'an. You took it down only during the month of Ramadan and recited it without understanding. How foolish you were, when you had access to the guidebook of life, not to read it often, ponder it and put its guidance to action! And how many times had your prayers been hasty and thoughtless, instead of the worship that would have purified you? How many times had you delayed going for Hajj for worldly reasons, seeing it as a burden rather than an opportunity? And when you did go, you treated it like a vacation and complained about the hotel not being fancy enough. Even on Hajj, your focus was worldly, and you missed out on seeing the signs of Allah all around you.

"Persist in Jihad in the cause of Allah with your money, your souls, and your tongue."
You had hated that word: Jihad. It made you think about bringing hardship and terrorism. But now you want to live your whole life struggling in the Way if you could do it over.

"Maintain communication and exchange of opinion among yourselves. Beware of disunity and enmity. Do not desist from promoting good deeds and cautioning against bad ones. Should you do that, the worst among you would be your leaders, and you will call upon Allah without response."
Most of the world is in the hands of bad leaders. But you yourself had done nothing to bring the good people together to strive in the way of Allah and to improve yourselves and the world. When others had made effort, you had mocked them as naïve. But if you had worked with them, maybe it would have made a difference. Did you make all your prayers be blocked by your own deeds or inaction?

"O Children of Abdul Muttalib! Do not shed the blood of Muslims under the banner: 'The Imam has been assassinated!' Only the assassin should be condemned to death.

If I die of this stroke of his, kill him with one similar stroke. Do not mutilate him! I have heard the Prophet, peace be upon him, say: 'Mutilate not even a rabid dog.'"
So many times in your life you had desired revenge more than justice. Now you see your anger and hatred as blackness consuming your heart. If only you could go to your Creator with a pure and free heart.
In only a few brief words, Imam Ali left a tremendous treasure – clear and simple instructions that if you had followed them, maybe you could also be exclaiming, "By the Lord of the Ka'ba, I am successful!" As you draw your last breath, you recite Salawat, grateful that there had been such people on the earth as the Prophet and his Ahlul Bayt (as) to guide mankind, but wishing you had lived by that guidance before this moment arrived.

“The ruler only pays attention to his own soul. (If he pays no attention to others) he will be distracted from Heaven and Hell will be in front of him. One who earnestly strives will be successful (and saved). Some will be busy in seeking hope. Those, who are remiss, will be in Hell-fire. Thus there will be three kinds of persons. There are two more: angles, which fly with their wings and a Prophet whom Allah has taken by His hand. There is no sixth (kind). The one who makes false claims will be destroyed. Those who rush heedlessly (into bad actions) will be made to fall. Those walk right-hand side and left hand side will lead (people) astray. The middle road is path on which there still remains the BOOK, the SUUNA and the reports (athaar) of Prophet.

Indeed Allah, the exalted, has treated the (strayed) community with two medicines-the whip and the sword. There will be no hesitation by the Imam in applying them- take cover in your houses, think and reconcile the differences, which are among you. Repent for what you have done. Whoever defies the truth will be destroyed. There are some affairs for which you have no excuse in my eyes. As for me, if I had wanted to say it, I would have said: May Allah forgive what has gone before…..

Watch me. If you find something to denounce, denounce it. If you recognize it, then hasten (to carry it out). There is truth and falsehood. Each has its supporters. If the false becomes leader, it would happen as happened in the past. If for a short time truth becomes scarce (rare), it will recede but only to advance again. If your lives returned (to earlier period) you would be happy. I fear that you are now living in transient period (as Prophet is not among us). I have only the ability to use IJTIHAD (to guide you)…..We are the family of the House (ahl al bayt), … We judge according to the Law of Allah (and His Book), and we have taken (knowledge) from Prophet of Allah. If you follow our pronouncement and decrees, you will be guided on right path by clear vision. If you do not do, Allah will destroy you at our hands. We are the standard of truth. Whoever follows our path will attain emancipation and delayers will be drowned. The vengeance of every believer will be realized through us. …. Allah will bring conquest at our hands not yours. Allah’s seal will be set through us not through you.

Ramadhan Kareem!

As humble and obedient servants we are thankful to Almighty Allah to enter in the month of Ramadhan once more. This is the month of Allah, the month of repentance, the month of fasting, the month of charity, the month of supplications and recommended prayers, but on the top of all and according to Qur'an, this is the month of Qur'an.

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِيَ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَى وَالْفُرْقَانِ

Allah has revealed this book to his last and our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAWW as a clear sign of guidance and judgment between right and wrong. It is an irony that we Muslims even after 1400 years are debating the method of understanding this book while ignoring a basic fact that the piety and purity of soul is the pre-requisite to understand this book. Though Arabic language skills and qualified teachers also required but if we look at the current Arab Governments and some students of famous personalities it is evident that they failed to distinguish between right and wrong.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

This is, perhaps, why we have the "Night of Power" after almost 20 days of catharsis. The night of power, the most precious one, comes every year in this month of Ramadhan. This night is superior to thousand months and the divine revelation of the Holy Quran took place in this night. It is recommended to search this night every year so the purified souls can be elevated to the domain of revelation to comprehend the teachings of Qur'an and finally be able to differentiate between right and wrong.

تَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ

The attitude of indifference and idleness of people around the world, particularly in Muslims, will only be removed when they will be able to differentiate between right and wrong. That is why Imam Khomeini RA extended the idea of purification (cleansing of souls) and self-restraint in the month of Ramadhan to include the International Day of Al-Quds on the last Friday, because only the purified and free souls can take brave actions for the oppressed people of the world.

We urges all Muslims to refrain from indulging in the moon sighting debates, which only divide us further, and instead, we should all focus our energies towards activities that unify the Ummah and make us responsible and caring human beings by:

Purifying soul and understanding of the Qur'an
Helping people in the community and around the world who are suffering from both man-made and natural disasters
Raising voices against occupying Zionism and colonial Imperialism to bring justice and peace to this great world we all live in

May Allah accept all your good deeds in this blessed month of Qur'an.

Shia attacked in Karbala, 12 Martyred

A rocket attack has claimed several lives in the Iraqi shrine city of Karbala as the capital Baghdad witnessed more deadly bombings.

"Several mortars landed at 11:00 p.m. (0800 GMT ) on Tuesday, killing seven pilgrims and injuring 46, in a neighborhood a few kilometers northwest of the center of the city," AFP quoted a Karbala police officer as saying on Wednesday.

The shells targeted Shia pilgrims who were coming from around the city to participate in the ceremony marking the birthday of Imam Mahdi -- the 12th Shia imam.

The mortar explosions also ripped through a number of nearby houses in the northwest of Karbala, which hosts the holy shrine of Imam Hossein's shrine -- the third Shia imam.

Meanwhile, a bomb detonated inside a restaurant at around 9:30 a.m. (0630 GMT) on Wednesday in Baghdad's northern neighborhood of Sadr City, killing five people.

A woman was among the victims of the blast which injured 13 more people, said officials from the defense and interior ministries who were speaking on condition of anonymity.

Meaning literally the mid-Shaaban visit, the al-Ziyara al-Shaabaniya is a pilgrimage to revive the memory of the birth of the Messiah-like Imam al-Mahdi, the 12th holiest figure for Shiites Muslims.

Karbala, with an estimated population of 572,300 people in 2003, is considered to be one of Shiite Muslims’ holiest cities.

The city, 110 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, is one of Iraq’s wealthiest, profiting both from religious visitors and agricultural produce, especially dates.

Imam Hussein’s tomb is a place of pilgrimage for many Shiite Muslims. Many elderly pilgrims travel there to await death, as they believe the tomb to be one of the gates to paradise.

The Day of the Oppressed People of the World

Allah has promised the righteously striving believers to appoint them as His deputies on earth, as He had appointed those who lived before. He will make the religion that He has chosen for them to stand supreme. He will replace their fear with peace and security. They will worship their Lord without fear and will not submit to anyone other than Him and will associate nothing with His worship and obedience
.(Al-Quran: Chapter al-Noor, 24:55)
We would like to congratulate our beloved Prophet Mohammad (p.b.u.h), Imams (a.s), the Leader of the Islamic movement, respected jurisprudents and all Muslims on the occasion of the birth of Imam Mahdi (a.s.).
The appearance of the Imam Mahdi (a.s) is Allah's favour for the oppressed and the weak, and is a means of their coming to power and gaining the promised divine succession of the world. The holy Qur'an says "We have decided to grant favour to the suppressed ones by appointing them leaders and heirs of the earth", (Al-Quran: Chapter al-Qasas, 28:5). The appearance of the Imam Mahdi (a.s) means the realization of the promise Allah made to the righteous in the Holy Quran. "Verily we have written in the Psalms (zaboor) after the Torah had been revealed: My righteous servants shall inherit the earth. (Al-Quran: Chapter al-Anbia, 21:105)

This auspicious occasion surely revives our hopes for a better future ahead when the Imam (a.s.) reappears from the occultation. Additionally, it is a special reminder to those suffering under oppression and tyranny that resistance and resilience in the face of injustice will only serve them in the long-haul. The belief in Imam Mahdi (a.s.) is a manifestation for global community that the battle between truth and falsehood will culminate in favour of forces of truth once the Promised one returns.

The continuation of the occultation of Imam (a.s) is meant to preserve the vigilance and advance the cause of justice. It is important that as part of our waiting of Imam, we persistently oppose all bullying powers (global, domestic, secular, religious or in any other shape, form or disguise), and remain steadfast during adversarial times. The global dominance of few arrogant and oppressive powers has yielded 2 billion starved people across the globe, millions displaced due to warmongering policies and majority of nations subservient. In such circumstances, the silver lining is the belief in the eventual global just governance of the ultimate saviour. It convinces human beings that the world status quo must be denounced and wait for a turnabout in the living conditions of the humanity at large. Hence, it is imperative and incumbent upon the well-wishers and followers of Imam Mahdi (a.s) to lay the groundwork necessary for his return in addition to the prayers.

Senior CNN editor sacked for praising the late Shiite cleric

New York, Jul 8- A senior editor with the CNN has been sacked for praising the late Shiite cleric Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah on Twitter.

Octavia Nasr, a senior Middle East editor, was fired after she expressed her respect for the late Islamist Hezbollah leader Fadlallah, who figured on a US terrorist list.

Sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah...one of Hezbollah giants I respect a lot, the tweet said.

Parisa Khosravi, the senior vice president of international news gathering for CNN Worldwide, said in an internal memo that after speaking with Nasr we have decided that she will be leaving the company.

At this point, we believe that her credibility in her position as senior editor for Middle Eastern affairs has been compromised going forward, said Khosarvi.

Fadlallah was a Hezbollah cleric and the organisation is considered a terrorist group by the United States.

Nasr later apologised for what she had written.

Reaction to my tweet was immediate, overwhelming and a provides a good lesson on why 140 characters should not be used to comment on controversial or sensitive issues, especially those dealing with the Middle East, Nasr said in a blogpost.

It was an error of judgment for me to write such a simplistic comment and I'm sorry because it conveyed that I supported Fadlallah's life's work. That's not the case at all, said Nasr, who joined CNN in 1990.

Nasr also explained that she used the word respect because Fadlallah took a contrarian and pioneering stand among Shia clerics on woman's rights.

He called for the abolition of the tribal system of honour killing. He called the practice primitive and non-productive. He warned Muslim men that abuse of women was against Islam, she said.

Lebanon's top Shiite cleric and influential sheik has died after an illness. He was 75.

An official at Behnam hospital south of Beirut, where Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah was being treated, confirmed his death today. He spoke on condition of anonymity, pending an official announcement.

Fadlallah's media office didn't confirm the statement but says an important announcement is being prepared.

Fadlallah was in hospital for the past two weeks but his condition deteriorated on Friday when complications from a liver problem led to an internal hemorrhage.

The Iraqi-born Fadlallah has followings in Lebanon and Iraq. He was described as a spiritual leader of the militant Hezbollah, a claim both he and the group denied.
